How do you know if you need to use a clay?
 
After thoroughly hand washing and drying your car, run your fingers over the surface, preferably from inside a cellophane bag.
 
This will enhance your sense of touch. You will feel bumps and rough spots. These are contaminants attacking the finish of your car.
